David DeCastro join the Steelers

Another Stanford player David DeCastro joined Andrew Luck in the draft at No. 24. The guard 6-ft-5, 316lbs player was picked up by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and expected to replace Doug Legursky as the starting left guard when the season begins.
DeCastro was an All-American player last year, playing and starting in 39 games in three seasons with the Cardinal.
Although DeCastro played as a right guard at Stanford, the Steelers Headcoach Mike Tomlin has faith in him and believes he is able to play on either side, depending of the needs of the team.

Charlie Batch and his “In the Pocket” Event

The National Football League heavily frowns upon their players gambling in casinos or participating in any type of organized gambling of any type. As such, you don’t hear of NFL players taking part in poker games or large poker events such as the World Series of Poker. However, some NFL players have found a way to still play their favorite game and in a way that the NFL will overlook and that is charity poker tournaments.

The best example of this is Charlie Batch and his annual “In the Pocket” charity event. Pokerlistings.com and other organizations reported on this event last year, one that allows fans to play poker, pool, or ping-pong with Batch and other sports celebrities. For a specified donation, players could play poker for fun with Batch or other NFL and sport starts. The money raised went towards Batch’s Best of the Best Foundation, an organization that provides literacy for young people and adults.

Batch’s charity event is not the only one that NFL players have supported. For the last two years, several players have participated in the Tyler’s Team Charity Event that benefits the Tyler McLellan Foundation. John Brock and Jim Jensen of the Miami Dolphins as well as James Lee and Errict Rhett of the Tampa Bay Bucs took part in the event. The Tyler McLellan Foundation helps to provide funding for youth sports in the South Florida area.

Drew Coleman, Marquice Cole, and Tanner Purdem of the New York Jets all participated last year in the 3rd Annual NYC Celebrity Poker Tournament which raised money for both Ride 2 Recovery and Mt. Sinai Children’s Hospital. The three helped to raise more than $20,000 for the charities.

Due to the NFL’s stance on gambling, you will not see NFL players covered on any site that list online poker rooms or covers live poker tournaments like the WSOP. Unless a players gets caught in a game they shouldn’t be playing in, about the only way you will hear about them playing poker will be in charity events. Hopefully the NFL will change their stance in the future, but at least for now the less fortunate can benefit from NFL players playing poker.

Steelers Latest Victim of Tebow Magic

The Steelers season came to a dissapointing end last Sunday against the Broncos losing 29-23 in overtime.  After the Steelers took a quick 6-0 lead in the first quarter the Broncos scored 20 unanswered points to take a 20-6 lead into halftime.  The Steelers were able to score 2 touchdowns in the 2nd half to force a 23 -23 tie at the end of regualtion.  However on the first play of overtime, Tim Tebow was able to connect with Thomas for a 80 yard touchdown.

The Steelers defense did not have an answer for Tim Tebow.  Tebow threw for 316 yards and 2 touchdowns and also rushed for 50 yards.  The absence of Safety Ryan Clark really showed, the Broncos were able to throw deep over the middle of the field which strecthed  the Steelers Defense.

Although Big Ben was playing injured he was still able to throw for 289 yards including a 31 yard touchdown to Cotchery in the 4th quarter.  And with Mendenhall being sidelined due to injury Redman was able to rush for 121 yards on 17 carries.

This marks the first time in Big Bens career that he has lost a postseason game on the road.

The Steelers defeated the Browns 13-9 this past Sunday to finish the season with a 12-4 record.

It was not a very pretty game, as the Steelers fell behind 6-0 and trailed 6-3 at half.  However in the 2nd half the Steelers were able to run the ball effectivley and Redman was able to find the endzone for a rushing score giving the Steelers the lead.

The Steelers finish the season in 2nd place in the AFC North and will be the number 5 seed in the AFC playoffs.  They will travel to play Denver in the wild card game.

Steelers Crush Rams

The Steelers wrapped up their 2011 home schedule with a 27-0 win over the Rams to go 7-1 at home.  Big Ben did not play in the game and it did not matter as the Steelers cruised to the win.

Rashard Mendenhall had over 100 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown.  The Steelers were able to controll the clock and controll the game.

The Steelers defense was very dominate as they allowed 0 points in the victory.

The Steelers need the Ravens to lose next and with a win of their own they will be the number 2 seed in the AFC Playoffs.

Steelers Lose to 49ers on MNF

The Steelers had a golden opportunity to seize control of the AFC North after the Ravens lost to the Chargers the night before.  The Steelers now controlled their destiny for the number 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.  However they were not able to take advantage as they lost to the 49ers 20-3.

Big Ben played hurt and it was obvious.  He was not able to move around in the pocket and threw 3 interceptions.  The Steelrs offense was not able to produce much offense and only scored 3 points.

The defense was not able to make any big plays and allowed to 4th quarter touchdowns which sealed the win for the 49ers.

The Steelers now trail the Ravens again for the AFC North lead with only 2 weeks left in the regular season.
